When I wrote about the increase in the use of social media, I said that learning was escaping from the L&D department; in some cases it’s also escaping from the bounds of the corporate firewall. Much of this is within the remit of the L&D department, although it may not always be driven by them.

Sometimes it may even be the IT department leading this, and for many of us that’s a significant change. There was a time when you couldn’t imagine hearing IT people talk about this at all, let alone as positively as I have seen lately!

So what is driving the move to making content available outside the firewall? Here are some of the main ones that I’ve seen.

At the end of 2011 I took some time to reflect upon the previous twelve months activity, and I was surprised at just how much of it was either directly or indirectly related to LMS. I then took a good look at the projects I've been working on and got to the heart of what has been driving each client in the use, or planned use of their LMS.

This isn’t about the basics; all of these organisations to some degree have a general need to manage a range of training activity and there are a whole bunch of reasons why an LMS is going to help them to do that. Steps for a Successful LMS Implementation

For the sake of this article, I'm going to assume that you've already been through the procurement process, selected an LMS and are now ready to implement it.


The critical first step is to ensure that everyone involved in the implementation knows exactly what's going to happen, and is completely clear about their role and responsibilities. Experience suggests that the most effective way to do this is to get everyone together face to face for a kick off meeting. It may be difficult to get everyone together in the same place at the same time, but it really is worth the effort. Time spent now is almost guaranteed to save you more time (and cost) later on.
